Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton was hospitalized in Miami this week after experiencing a serious mental health crisis during a TikTok livestream, according to authorities and multiple media reports.
Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira Jr., was taken to a hospital Tuesday night after viewers became concerned about his safety and called 911.
The Miami Dade Sheriff’s Office said deputies and a crisis response team went to Hilton’s home in Westchester, Florida. Authorities said he was alone inside the home at the time.
Rather than immediately entering the residence, deputies used de escalation techniques and gave Hilton space while attempting to resolve the situation safely.
The sheriff’s office said that approach is often used when someone is experiencing a mental health emergency and there is no immediate threat to other people. Creating time and distance can help officers communicate with the person while reducing the chance of anyone being injured.
Hilton was eventually transported by ambulance to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital for medical care. Authorities said he was placed under Florida’s Baker Act, which allows someone experiencing a mental health crisis to be temporarily held for evaluation when officials believe the person may pose an immediate danger to themselves or others.
TikTok also ended the livestream and reportedly removed Hilton’s account for violating the platform’s community guidelines.
Hilton’s Family Says He Is Receiving Care
On Wednesday, Hilton’s family and team released a statement confirming that he was receiving medical treatment.
“We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers,” the statement said. “We can confirm that Perez is receiving medical care, and our family’s focus right now is on his well being.”
The family also asked for privacy while Hilton receives care.
The incident comes only weeks after Hilton moved back to Miami following several years in Las Vegas.
Hilton had recently spoken publicly about having complicated feelings surrounding his return to Florida. He has discussed difficult memories connected to growing up in Miami, including the death of his father while Hilton was still in high school.
He had also spoken with followers about financial stress related to medical expenses from an earlier health issue.
A Celebrity Media Figure With Deep Los Angeles Ties
Hilton became one of the most recognizable names in celebrity blogging during the 2000s, building his career around coverage of Hollywood stars, entertainment news and pop culture.
